Fall is almost here! If you’re a homeowner (or if you’re responsible for maintaining the place you live), it’s time to pull out your list and spend a day completing some tasks that will keep your home in the best condition. Here are 8 things you’ll want to check on before winter arrives!
Clean your gutters.

Check the batteries in your smoke detector.
This is a task you should do twice a year to ensure that they are in proper working order.
Clean or replace the filter in your furnace.
A clogged or dirty filter can not only spread germs and dust around your home, but it can also cause your heater to run continuously (or at least more than it should), making your heating bill higher than it would normally be. Winterize your exterior faucets, hoses and sprinkler systems.
Exterior faucets can freeze in the colder winter months, causing costly repairs. But for a few dollars, you can purchase easy-to-install faucet covers to keep them protected. Clean your chimney.
If you burn real wood in your fireplace, soot and creosote can build up, creating a fire danger. The Chimney Safety Institute of America shares the following information: “The National Fire Protection Association Standard 211 is that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary. This takes into account the fact that even if you don't use your chimney much, animals may build nests in the flue or there may be other types of deterioration that could make the chimney unsafe to use.”
Seal air leaks.
Cool winter air can creep into your home through the smallest cracks, especially around door and window frames, between trim and siding and where pipes and wires enter your home. An inexpensive tube of exterior caulk and some weather stripping will quickly seal those leaks, keeping the warm air in and the cold air out.
Prune trees and plants.
Late fall is typically the best time to prune trees and plants, although it’s always a good idea to check with your state’s extension service. Well-pruned trees are stronger and healthier. Dead branches or weak limbs and diseased trees create a danger to you and your home.
